Learning Math is playing real life (or playing math is learning real life)

School and home or playing and learning (preparing for the grower up life) shouldn’t be too far away one from each other, but interfere.
Teaching mathematics has been changed a lot in the last years as everything around us. That’s why the parents are more and more challenged to “run” after their kids; trying to stay as close as possible to their children’ hobbies, preoccupations or interests.
Based on an article of Lorna Smith, BBC is talking this month on its website about the importance of introducing math in our children daily life encouraging them to use it in the most natural and gamely possible way. Counting their toys, fingers, different things in the house, but also going shopping, thinking about time (birthdays, time at digital or classical clock), measure their room, their bed, desk, toy or even themselves (using different units for length, height or weight) can be used for developing of their mathematical skills. A kid’s life means: eating, sleeping, living with their family and friends and playing (this is actually their job). If we can succeed in introducing math in their daily life, but also in their “job” – playing math games with them – then we know we have done everything possible for approaching them to mathematics.
